The Smell Of Christmas Eve

It was a freezing winter morning. I was standing at the tram stop and waiting to see a dear friend of mine. We were close to Christmas time, and we had to exchange gifts. I looked around, and the streets of Milan were full of flashing lights. People moved frantically between one shop and another to make their last purchases, and a thin fog pervaded the city, as is customary in the northern metropolis. The tram arrived, I run to meet my friend who immediately threw his arms around my neck and kissed me on the cheek. I notice that instead of walking away, he moved closer, plunged his face into my scarf, and whispered in my ear, “Wow, what a wonderful smell you have! Just the ones I like!”. “I’m glad you like it, it’s a gift I gave myself for Christmas.”  " IL (Eau de Toilette) | Lancetti " had just come out on the market, the autumn-winter season of the early 90s. At that time I was working to support my studies, and the perfume was only one, and it had to last for the entire s

It’s not the first time something like this has happened to me, and I reckon it won't be the last one, that ZARA delivers a scent targeted to one gender and it flawlessly suits for the other gender, either. ZARA Laboratori di Saponi in Roma (i.e. Soap Laboratories in Rome) is exactly one of those, allegedly released for women, yet wearable by men who like citrus-floral-chypre accord. Yeah, an interesting part of it that it is sold as a feminine fragrance, why? Hence, as the ABBA were used to sing long ago "Mamma mia, here I go again... My my, how can I resist you?"

This unconventional grace belongs to the Chypre family and reveals citrus, lightly floral, and amber notes. I like when the name really covers whatever the perfume is, this one could be a feminine soapy, fresh, and floral smell, yet its a masculine summer chypre scent at the end.

What does ZARA Laboratori di Saponi in Roma smell like? If you're accustomed to Acqua di Giò pour Homme, just cut the salty marine accord out, bring the fruity wild berries accord in, and here you are. I find it really interesting, it smells a bit as floral and a tad as woody scent at the same time, with both fresh floral coldness and warm woody sweetness.

The head starts citrusy, a bit soapy and fresh, with a blast of citrus fruit juice of dominant bergamot, sweet mandarine, a tad of orange, and sour lemon, and it gets sweeter as time goes by.

In the heart, I smell some brittle wild berries, such as bittersweet blackberries, the fruity combination of sour cherries, fresh blueberries, and ripened raspberries mingle together to create an irresistible berry medley, with a bouquet of white blooms, delicate freesia and tender rose, and a hint of mignonette which adds intense, sweet, violet-like and fruity odor with a green nuance to the overall redolence.

The dry down is all about the woodiness of cedar and sweetness of amber. Here I smell dried fruits and a hint of sweet tobacco, maybe a tail of the resenda odorata. The patchouli here is modern, mild, nothing dirty nor earthy, and keeps the base sour, not cloying.

I like the bottle, a very artisanal one, minimal, which shows the light blue juice. I really love Zara
Laboratori di Saponi in Roma
, it’s an elegant, refined and modern fragrance without the "calone" and "seaweed" facets of Acqua di Giò. On my skin the longevity is very good, it lasted 5-6 hours, and this is a Zara scent! Sillage stays close to the arms, and I suggest to wear during warm and hot days, summer is the right season.
