The Smell Of Christmas Eve

It was a freezing winter morning. I was standing at the tram stop and waiting to see a dear friend of mine. We were close to Christmas time, and we had to exchange gifts. I looked around, and the streets of Milan were full of flashing lights. People moved frantically between one shop and another to make their last purchases, and a thin fog pervaded the city, as is customary in the northern metropolis. The tram arrived, I run to meet my friend who immediately threw his arms around my neck and kissed me on the cheek. I notice that instead of walking away, he moved closer, plunged his face into my scarf, and whispered in my ear, “Wow, what a wonderful smell you have! Just the ones I like!”. “I’m glad you like it, it’s a gift I gave myself for Christmas.”  " IL (Eau de Toilette) | Lancetti " had just come out on the market, the autumn-winter season of the early 90s. At that time I was working to support my studies, and the perfume was only one, and it had to last for the entire s

Although Kenzo Power Cologne was released approximately 10 years ago, at that time I already had the original Kenzo Power in my wardrobe, therefore I did not pay too much attention to it being Cologne a flanker of it. Nonetheless, a couple of weeks ago I came across a Cologne's tester bottle, and instantly my mind went back to that time, the original floral smell of that scent made of secret flower unfolded in my nose, the powdery, androgynous, and oriental aura created by Power, and without hesitation I bought it for a ridiculous price.

I happened that this morning I noticed the bottle on the shelf of my bathroom, and I wore it to go to the office. The opening of Kenzo Power Cologne is rich of bergamot along with verbena and cardamom. The verbena is an excellent substitute for the original Power's neroli as it also carries the citrus aspect along with a slightly floral aspect. The cardamom imparts a cool soft spiciness which also lends itself towards a citrus feel. The combination of bergamot and cardamom is the same as in the original Power and carries surprising "power" for a fragrance trying to emulate an eau de cologne.
The heart starts with a geranium note which is green and floral at the same time, sharing that similarity to the lavender in Aqua Admirabilis. That starts as pepper and coriander take the geranium and add a spicy feel to the middle of this. Both of these notes add a bite to the floral character that takes this away from the clean and fresh and more towards the spicy and floral. Yet in Power Cologne, I catch that powdery and buttery aspects of the iris flower, or better the orris root, which in my opinion is the secret flower never mentioned in the pyramid notes.

The base is a woody mix of cedar and tolu balsam with a touch of vetiver thrown in. This gives Kenzo Power Cologne the feel of the original Power in the woodiness. Where the original went for amber to warm things up, in this fragrance vetiver keeps the woods on the clean and fresh side of the fragrance line, which is appropriate for a modern cologne.

Kenzo Power Cologne has outstanding longevity and sillage. This is remarkable because most Eau de Colognes are made to last only a short while. I am not the biggest fan of flankers when they are too similar to the original but in this case, the perfumer has done an excellent job of marrying the qualities of a traditional eau de cologne and the original Kenzo Power. In doing so he has created a fragrance that is recognizably made up of that fragrant genetics but can stand on its own, deservedly so. Cologne is a more gentle fragrance to the original Power and can easily be worn on a daily basis. I find this highly distinct and rather simple with its citrus opening nice green heart and lovely oriental dry down. You should give this a try if you ever come across a bottle... don't make the same mistake I did long ago.

I like the scent because of its lightness but the lingering and passionate smell. This is ideal of ordinary days when you just want to go to the office, or for men who want to smell fresh while hitting the gym, or just during the ordinary days of spring and summer. To my flavor, Kenzo Power Cologne is suitable for spring and summer days and early evenings, for both young and old men.
